When creating characters, make sure they aren't a piece of cardboard. Make sure
they have a back-story. Make sure they have personality that stands out. A
motive too. Don't do the SAO and have the antagonist forget his motive
for killing so many people. Don't be like the cast of Shingeki no Kyojin.
Example:
Mikasa Ackerman from Shingeki no Kyojin. She is a Mary-Sue. Or, "A perfect character". Her personality doesn't stand out. She seemingly only cares and lives for Eren. Don't make characters like that. Make sure they have other purposes too.
Make
characters like mine; Like Lucius. Who seemingly lives to protects Arthur, but deep down, that is not his true motive.
Like Yuffie. She strives to be a good knight, in order to show her father that she doesn't need to live a prim-and-proper life of a princess. Like Arthur. He wants to know the reason behind the time paradox, why it occurred when he was born, and his ties to Pendragon, and God of Death, Rema'lai the Fang. Even like Phoebe, who, despite her calming and nice demeanor, she is actually a backstabbing bitch who manipulates people for selfish reasons.
Example of Bad Backstory or one that makes no sense and shouldn't be there:Mikasa's.
It's just so random. I mean, it is good back-story, but not for SnK. Her being sold as a slave or whatever, then along with Eren,
killing the murderers of her parents at the age of 8-9(?).
No.
Even Lucius wasn't that messed up when his parents were murdered. He did what a child would actually do. Freak the fuck out and find the nearest adult.
Example of Bad Motives:
SAO's. That's all I have to say. He forgot why he killed so many people.
Examples of Good Motives:
Pendragon took the throne from Emperor Jack Rahl after killing him, causing a war between House Pendragon, and House Rahl. Thus, Jack's grandsons, Julien and Cedric, try and kill the whole House Pendragon.
Another short post, but hopefully helpful.

SnazzGary's Helpful Tips on being Cliché/ Deus Ex Machina
When coming up with a story-Be it romance, fantasy, or anything else; Stay away from being too cliché and having a deus ex machina.
For example, my story Kowareta Tsubasa is based on probably one of the most overused legends of all time- The Legend of King Arthur Pendragon.
But, it's not solely based on TLoKAP. Actually, Pendragon is a minor character in it.
Enough rambling about Kowareta Tsubasa....
You want your story to pop, have twists and whatnot. Here, a scrapped idea from Kowareta Tsubasa. (No, I am not using this anymore. If you want to use the concept, please, ask. I find it very original.)
Lucius is badly wounded, and Arthur cannot protect him. Why? Because it turns out, Arthur didn't have the real Excalibur. He had a fake. His enemy actually has it. Which, you probably can figure out how that would turn out.
Didn't see that coming, didja? You would think, since Arthur is the reincarnation of Pendragon, that he would have Excalibur. Huheuhue, well NOPE.
Anyways, common cliché list:

Cliché- a phrase or opinion that is overused and betrays a lack of original thought.
Deus Ex Machina- an unexpected power or event saving a seemingly hopeless situation
Now, avoiding a cliché is super hard to do. Because nothing is original anymore. Unless, of course, you use your dreams as stories. Then the shit gets really weird. Like, Stephen King weird. For example, my story Kowareta Tsubasa is based on probably one of the most overused legends of all time- The Legend of King Arthur Pendragon.

Anyways, common cliché list:
- In the nick of time: Meaning something happened just in time, (actually, this is a deus ex machina as well.)
- Brave as a lion: This describes a very brave person.
- Opposites attract: This means that people who like different things and have different views are likely to fall in love or to become friends
- What goes around comes around: This cliché teaches the lesson that the way you treat others will eventually be the way you are treated
- Cat got your tongue?
- Fall head over heels
- And they all lived happily ever after
- The quiet before the storm
- Tail between his legs

SnazzGary's Helpful Tips on Writing Characters Properly
When writing a fanfiction that has someone else's character in it, make sure to research information about that
character. Don't pull stuff out of nowhere. Actually researching. It's apart of a good story. If you don't research, you won't have a good story/characters.
Part 1
I will give examples to help you.
I will use my bby Kousuke from Btooom! as an experiment.
He is a great example of character actions screw ups. Kira Kousuke, or as everyone else knows him as, the psychotic little shit from Btooom!
Tbh, Kousuke is one of my favorites. Don't ask why. Because either A) I can't tell you, because I, myself, do not know why, or B) Because I blame his father for how he's turned out. You all seen how his father abused him, and, if you have been reading recent chapters, Kousuke actually cried because of it. My poor bby :'(
DO NOT make Kousuke a nice and caring person, because he isn't. He doesn't really know what being nice is. He has no empathy.
Tips on Kousuke: There is barely any Btooom! fanfics, and most of them are of Kousuke, surprisingly. But, what they do wrong is make Kousuke caring towards their OC. This is a big NOPE from Gary-Sensei. I will give you an excerpt from a fanfic. If you are the author, I bear nothing against you. If you do not want my opinion on this, please, comment saying so. Just not rudely, because I will reply in the same manner.
We do not do this.
I appreciate that someone else wants to write about Kousuke, but, let me tell you hwhat- Never, in any circumstance, would Kousuke be this friendly and intimate with someone. So far, he can't trust anyone. He most likely had a small group of friends (from what I've seen in his flashback), but they looked mostly male. I cannot, for the life of me, see a girl being friends with Kousuke. ( I would, tbh.) I don't wanna say this, but so far, even with his new found friends, it seem he treats women sexually , not friendly. You cannot deny this, for god's sake, the little shit got a raging boner when he was told one of his teammates is a porn star actress.

"Yeah Kousuke and I are friends!" I said matter-of-factly. I heard Kousuke laugh a little beside me, putting his hand on my armNo.
